Northwestern students strutted to a sold-out crowd Sunday night for the 9th annual Unity Charity Fashion Show. The show raised money and awareness for a Chicago-based mental health advocacy organization called NoStigmas.
The show started in 2007, when it was held in Norris University Center's Louis Room. It has continued to grow each year, and this year took place in the Hilton Orrington hotel's ballroom in front of a sold-out crowd. Unity is an entirely student-run group that consists of 12 different cultural campus organizations.
The group dedicates winter quarter to organizing the annual show, which involves music groups, dance performances. This year, the show featured rapper Joshua "Alex Xander" Crowder, a cappella group the Treblemakers, and a dance performance by Ballet Folklórico Mexicano de Northwestern: Ritmo de Mis Ancestros.
The main event, of course, was the fashion. Students modeled clothing donated by local designers and stores. The show involved several themed segments, including casual, model's choice, and coachella.
Although the show’s ostensible purpose is to celebrate fashion, Unity's selection of models, peformances, and clothing was also intended to celebrate diversity and multiculturalism on campus and in Chicago at large.
